چکیده

Introduction Sepsis lacks a reliable measure of disease activity [1,2]. Therefore, it remains unclear how to monitor the response to treatment. Little is known about changes in vital signs during sepsis resuscitation and biomarkers for disease activity are not available to evaluate effects of treatment in sepsis patients at the bedside [2,3]. Trends in vital signs and biomarker levels during resuscitation might provide information about response to treatment at a very early stage of sepsis.

Trends in vital signs and routine biomarkers in patients with sepsis during resuscitation in the emergency department: a prospective observational pilot study

OBJECTIVES Sepsis lacks a reliable and readily available measure of disease activity. Thereby, it remains unclear how to monitor response to treatment. Research on numerous (new) biomarkers associated with sepsis provided disappointing results and little is known about changes in vital signs during sepsis resuscitation. We hypothesised that trends in vital signs together with routine biomarker ...

Critically ill patients in emergency department may be characterized by low amplitude and high variability of amplitude of pulse photoplethysmography

BACKGROUND The aim of the present pilot study was to determine if pulse photoplethysmography amplitude (PPGA) could be used as an indicator of critical illness and as a predictor of higher need of care in emergency department patients. METHODS This was a prospective observational study. We collected vital signs and one minute of pulse photoplethysmograph signal from 251 consecutive patients a...

An observational study using ultrasound to assess physiological changes following fluid bolus administration in paediatric sepsis in the emergency department

BACKGROUND Fluid bolus administration is widely recommended as part of the initial treatment of paediatric sepsis, though the physiological benefits and harms are unclear. The primary aim of this study is to determine the effect of fluid bolus administration on cardiac index (CI). Secondary aims are to determine the effect of fluid bolus administration on extra-vascular lung water (EVLW), wheth...

Ultrasound and NICOM in the assessment of fluid responsiveness in patients with mild sepsis in the emergency department: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE We investigated whether combining the caval index, assessment of the global contractility of the heart and measurement of stroke volume with Noninvasive Cardiac Output Monitoring (NICOM) can aid in fluid management in the emergency department (ED) in patients with sepsis. SETTING A prospective observational single-centre pilot study in a tertiary care centre. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY...
